ASTM F1346 and Pool Safety Covers
ASTM F1346 is a performance specification and labeling standard published by ASTM International for swimming pool, spa, and hot tub covers that are sold as safety covers. Automatic, mesh, and solid systems can qualify when the installed product matches a tested configuration. A solar blanket, winter tarp, or untested debris cover is not a safety cover under this standard.
When a product may be called a safety cover
Safety cover is a defined product class, not a marketing adjective. ASTM International publishes F1346 as the common US reference for performance tests and required labels. A brochure badge, a photo of people standing on fabric, or a seller saying the cover is "just as safe" is not the standard.
The installed cover, anchors, hardware, and span have to match the configuration that was tested. A field change can void the claim even if the fabric roll has the same name.
ASTM safety claim verification checklist
Use this checklist before you accept a safety-cover claim. Ask for documents that name the model and the installation, not a generic logo.

Load rating is not permission to walk on the cover
Performance tests describe a laboratory or listed condition. They are not an invitation to walk, sit, or play on the cover at your house. People, pets, and furniture add dynamic loads the owner cannot see. Keep the cover closed for the barrier job. Use the deck to walk around the pool.
Installation state changes performance
A tested cover that is loose, missing anchors, torn, or sitting on the wrong span is not the tested system. Standing water, ice, and a cover that has left the track also change how the fabric behaves. Repair and maintenance pages on this site are diagnosis frameworks.
