Can an Automatic Pool Cover Stay On in Winter?
Some automatic covers stay on all winter if the installer designed for that climate. Others are swim-season machines that should not sit under snow. Ice, standing water, and travel in a freeze are stop conditions. This page is the winter-use brief, not a promise that every fabric system is a snow roof.
What has to be true to leave it on
The manufacturer and installer have to say this model can winter in your climate. Water level still matters. A pump plan still matters if the fabric holds rain and snowmelt. Tracks still need a path that ice has not locked. If any of those is a guess, buy a seasonal cover or ask for a written winter plan.
Snow, ice, and travel
Do not run the cover to dump a snow load. Do not chip ice off the fabric. Wait for thaw, pump meltwater if the design allows a cover pump, then inspect webbing before the first spring travel.
