Automatic Pool Cover Installation
Automatic pool cover installation is a construction sequence, not a single trade visit. Tracks, housing, drainage, coping, and power have to be decided before the deck is finished. This hub is for owners and builders who need to know what to lock in at design, excavation, and coping, and what belongs to a cover technician versus an electrician.

What has to be true before fabric is ordered
You need finished length and width, square corners or a documented out-of-square plan, a housing location, a track type, and a path for water out of the box. Guessing those after tile is set is how projects stall.
Trade split
The builder owns shell geometry, deck elevation, and housing rough-in. The electrician owns the circuit and disconnect. The cover installer owns tracks, roller, fabric, limits, and commissioning. Write that split into the bid so gaps do not sit between contracts.
| Stage | Builder | Cover installer |
|---|---|---|
| Design | Pool shape and deck plan | Track and housing recommendation |
| Excavation | Box and drain rough-in | Confirm box size |
| Coping | Hold elevations | Set or verify guides |
| Commissioning | Water at operating level | Limits, travel, owner briefing |

New construction versus retrofit
New work can hide undertrack, size the box, and pour a drain before coping. Retrofit work usually keeps the deck and adds top track or a recessed top track if someone is already cutting the stone.
Open new construction or existing pool for the stage you have. Do not use a new-build housing drawing on a finished patio.
What to lock at each stage
Design locks shape, housing end, and track family. Excavation locks box size and drain path. Coping locks elevations that the gliders have to follow. Commissioning locks water level and owner brief.
- Housing end chosen before the equipment pad is poured
- Drain that can leave the box without flooding the motor space
- Power or hydraulic provision on the same drawing as the box
- A written out-of-square plan if corners are not 90 degrees
Drawings that actually matter
The useful sheet shows housing length, lid finish, drain path, track type, and who owns power. The project specification checklist and the RFQ checklist are the same list in two formats.
Coping is the lock-in moment. After tile is set, top track is usually the honest retrofit and undertrack is a demo conversation.
常见问题
- Can an existing pool take an automatic cover?
- Often yes if the deck can accept top track or a recessed guide and there is room for a housing. Freeform and vanishing-edge pools need a separate review.
- When is it too late for undertrack?
- After coping and tile are set, undertrack is a demo conversation. Top track is the honest retrofit unless the owner is already opening the deck.
- Who should be on site at commissioning?
- The cover installer, someone who can set operating water level, and the person who will hold the key. An electrician should have already landed the disconnect.
