Pool Cover Drainage Requirements
The cover box collects splash, rain, and condensation. Without a drain path, water sits on the roller, the motor, and the fabric roll. Drainage is a construction item, not a later accessory. This page is the vault-water brief for new builds and remodeled housings.

Why the vault must drain
A wet box rusts hardware, soaks fabric, and kills electric motors. Hydraulic systems still suffer flooded rollers and rotten lids. Owners then see mildew, a cover that will not open, or a breaker that trips after rain. Those calls start in the drain, not in the key switch.
What to provide
A low point in the box, a pipe that is not crushed by concrete, and a legal place for that water to go. Gravity to a sump or approved drain is the usual path. A lid that sheds patio water away from the vault helps. A sealed box with no outlet does not.
| Item | Builder check | Fail if |
|---|---|---|
| Box low point | Drain at the real bottom | Outlet sits above standing water |
| Pipe protection | Sleeve or mark before pour | Line is flattened in the beam |
| Discharge | Named destination | Water dumps into the shell or the soil under the deck |
| Lid shed | Patio water stays off the vault | The lid funnels rain into the roller |
| Service | Outlet can be cleared later | Drain is buried with no cleanout |

What owners can check
After rain, look in the vault if the lid allows it. Standing water is a stop-use cue before you run an electric drive. Do not drill a new hole in a finished box. Call the installer or builder.
What to read with this page
Use the parent hub for the product family, then stay inside this cluster for the decision you still have open. The related cards below are the three pages that usually settle the next question without sending you back to a generic search.
If travel is already unsafe, leave the guide and open repair. If you need a preliminary system read, use request system advice with photos of both ends and both long sides.
Where the water is allowed to go
Box water should leave the housing without sitting on the drive. Deck water should not pour through the lid joint into a dry motor space. Cover-top water on a solid or automatic sheet is a pump job, not a drain-into-the-pool job if that dumps debris back on the water.
常见问题
- Can I add a pump instead of a drain?
- A pump is a backup, not a substitute for a construction drain. Pumps fail. Gravity still has to have a path.
- Does drainage change track type?
- No. Every housing needs it. Recessed channels need their own outlet as well so the rail slot does not become a trough.
- Can I drain the box into the pool?
- Only if the manufacturer allows it and the outlet cannot flood the motor. Dirty box water on the swimming surface is still a water-quality problem.
- Is a gravel pit under the box enough?
- Not if the pit clogs or sits below groundwater. A named pipe with slope is the honest detail.
