How each drive works
An electric system puts a motor in or beside the cover box. The motor turns the roller. Moisture, access, and a legal disconnect decide whether that is a clean spec.
A hydraulic system keeps the electric motor on a power pack in an equipment area. Fluid lines run to a drive at the housing. The tradeoff is line routing, pack ventilation, and a technician who can work the hydraulic circuit.

Installation and pool-shape fit
Track type and pool shape do not change because you picked a drive. Rectangular and near-rectangular pools are the straightforward cases for both. Freeform, vanishing-edge, and raised-wall pools need a shape review either way. Hydraulic does not rescue a pool that cannot take tracks honestly.
Maintenance, repair, and cost drivers
Owners still clean tracks and hold water level. Electric service often starts at the motor and the housing drain. Hydraulic service often starts at the pack, fittings, and line protection. The pack and lines add equipment cost. A simpler housing can offset some of that. Compare complete scopes.
Which drive to specify
Pick hydraulic when you want the motor off the pool end and you can give the pack a dry, reachable room with protected lines. Pick electric when the housing already has dry motor space and a nearby disconnect. If neither condition is true, fix the site before you order fabric.

- Safety comes from the installed cover system and how people use it. Hydraulic mainly moves motor and moisture risk away from the pool end.
- Can I switch later?
- Only if the housing, roller, and tracks were built for the other drive. Treat conversion as a new design, not a parts swap.
- Does hydraulic remove all electricity from the pool end?
- The drive at the water is fluid. The pack still needs a circuit and a disconnect in the equipment area.
- Can I decide drive after the deck is poured?
- You can, but the box, conduit, and line sleeves should already allow both. Changing after stone is set is a retrofit, not a checkbox.
